Meeting 7th November - Sorry no pictures yet

Our highest attendance yet. Welcome to Graham Thornton, Frank Collins, Jerry Arnold, John Russel, Sean Groom, Ian McMeekan, Oliver Peacock, Peter Luff, Shailesh Patel, Denis Foster and Sam.

Jerry Arnold spoke about the Community and Vocational aspect of Rotary giving us ideas and warnings about some of the pitfalls. Thank you Jerry.

Denis Foster brought along items from the district shop.

Susan Greenwood gave us a brief talk about her life and work. Having lived in Scotland, Argentine and Indonesia because of her husband's work, Susan has now settled in Colchester. Susan has experienced a variety of jobs, including lab work, retail, Citizens advice bureau, working with the homeless and Marriage Guidance and has always been happiest when caring for people, whether it is family or the public. Susan was first introduced to Rotary in Indonesia and was also a founder member of another club so she comes to us with a wealth of Rotary experience. Although Susan has a problem with her sight, in that she has lost her central vision she is still helping others with her current work. Well done Sue - thank you for a very enlightening talk.

NO MEETING NEXT WEEK BECAUSE IT IS CHARTER NIGHT!!!!!

Meeting 31st October 2001

A quick welcome to some of our regulars - a few words about membership procedures and a run through of Charter Night things then - HEY PRESTO! a magician.

Michael J Fitch

Michael J Fitch

How does he do it? We were all watching so closely. There was one piece of rope, then two, then three; one minute each piece was the same then all 3 were different lengths. HOW? How did he know Kim picked outthe four of clubs?

A fantastic performance. Thank you Michael and we can't wait until Charter Night.

Meeting 24th October 2001

Welcome to David Reeves (his second visit) and Kate Bunting. Also thanks to Harry Royle for bringing along Pia Rius and her partner Adrian. Pia is an ambassadorial scholar from Argentina and gave us an intriguing glimpse of some Argentinian customs and clothes.

Sadly the magic performed by Michael J Fitch was not sufficient to keep him out of hospital so we had to miss his entertainment. Get well soon Michael and we hope you will arrange another visit.

Venue We are delighted with our new venue. Dee has volunteered to give us all a lesson in voice projection so that we can be heard above the air conditioning units.

Charter Night Just a few little creases to iron out still ......... and we need a few more people. I'm sure it will be great on the night! NOTE that there will not be a breakfast meeting on the 14th November.

Raffle Sue Pipe won the hand made throw - what a lot of work went into that!

Next meeting OK - we know it is the fifth Wednesday of the month but we are still going to meet at Leisure World for breakfast on 31st October.

Meeting 17th October 2001

This was our first meeting since changing our venue to Leisure World.

David Friend gave us a superb overview of RI/RIBI and the international structure of Rotary. Thank you David.

Fire Walk The MSRC Fire walk made a huge impact on Lawrence, Christine and Tracy. Their two hour training convinced them that they could tackle anything with their 'We are Powerful, We are Strong, We are Magnificent' attitude. Thank you to John for the cheque from Forum, our Mother Club.

Thanks to Forum for their support of the Fire Walk

Rotary Ambassadors Pam's idea to organise an informal get together for the Rotary Ambassadors was hugely successful. Ian McMeekan gave 12 students and 12 Centurions a guided tour round Colchester. Thank you Ian. Jackie provided a scrummy tea at the Mercury - ably assisted by Una and Ken. Thanks to Dee for the use of the bar and the tour round the Mercury - we won't tell about the secrets that we saw in the workshop. The students saw parts of Colchester that they might never have seen as well as meeting fellow Ambassadorial Scholars. The event could well have instigated trips to the Panto and Colchester United as well as friendships amongst the students. Well done Pam - a good idea and well organised.

Parcel Wrapping Vicky is organising a rota of people to wrap parcels at Debenhams from 17th November on Saturdays and Sundays. Let Vicky know if you are available. We are told that training will be given!

Raffle The £30 voucher for a meal, generously donated by Harbour Lights at Walton on the Naze was won by Rachel. A little reward for all that work Rachel put in for the Inaugural Breakfast!

Next meeting in the Classics Bar at Leisure World on Wednesday 24th October 7.00am.

Meeting 10th October 2001

Thank you to David Moss from Manningtree who came to talk about Membership Services and welcome to Sean Groom.

Pam has arranged for Ian McMeekan to give a guided tour of Colchester on Saturday (mainly) for the benefit of the Rotary Ambassadors, finishing with tea in the bar at the Mercury - thanks to Dee for use of the premises and Jacky and Una for providing the food.

Job Talk - Rachel Fryer
Rachel grew up in Suffolk and worked in Hotel Management covering everything from publicity, marketing, booking in, booking out, personal services(!) through to providing transport and arranging guided tours round Constable Country, which led to work in the tourist industry. Having married a fruit farmer, Rachel was a founder member of the Women's Farmer's Union and brought up her family in Ardleigh, the youngest of whom is now doing his A levels. Rachel recently gave up her job at Stoke by Nayland Golf and Leisure and decided to form her own events company - so if you want the worry taken out of your next function just mail Consider It Done consideritdoneuk@yahoo.co.uk

Meeting 3rd October 2001

The first meeting of the INTERIM Rotary Club of Colchester.

We started off by patting ourselves on the back about how well the Inaugural Breakfast went last week - then realised that all the organisers had skipped this weeks meeting - they are obviously a modest bunch!

From that point on
I think it is safe to say that it was
Pams' meeting - read on

Picture of Pam

Rotary Ambassors Pam is keen to organise an informal session with the Rotary Ambassador Scholars to point out the sites of Colchester which they MUST visit - (Simon thought we were talking about the bars) - see the Events page for more info

Job Talk Pam gave us a brief look at her life, growing up in Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, then studying languages at Leeds University. Pam's career started in marketing and evolved through PR and teaching to her current role involved with the Education and Business Partnership.

Raffle Pam won the raffle! Angus won the second prize and doesn't he look pleased (the teddy I mean)

AOB Pam suggested going on a weekend trip to one of the Landmark Trust properties and is hoping to organise something - anyone interested - see Pam.

26th September Inaugural Breakfast

7.00 am at the Rose and Crown saw 27 founder members of the Proposed Rotary Club of Colchester Centurion greeting Rotarians from 13 clubs to their Inaugural Breakfast Meeting, all ready for the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, followed by Bucks Fizz, toast and croissants.

In true Centurion style it was a jolly occasion! Master of Ceremonies, Mr Ian McMeekan ensured the programme ran smoothly. Frank Collins gave the Introductory Address and introduced the members of the proposed club.

The Inaugural resolution was proposed by Kim Collier and seconded by Lawrence Wood.

Graham Thornton, in his role of District Governor, made the Declaration of due formation of the New Club and gave an address.

Lawrence Wood interrupted the more serious proceedings with some light and very apt entertainment. Lawrence couldn't be expected to amuse us all on his own, so he was helped along by George Formby, Ted Heath, Max Bygraves and Frank Spencer. At least Lawrence can blame his co-performers for giving Judy the reputation of being dipso, and letting out the secret that Christine likes her hands in rubber.

What do the established Rotarians make of the Interim President, Christine Beedle, who describes herself as the Essex Scrubber and the Slapper with a Clapper. (Sorry - haven't got room for the full story - you'll have to wait until Christine has written her book).

Christine
John Russel
When John Russell, the President of the 'Mother Club', Colchester Forum, gave his address he pointed out that, while Christine's definition of a scrubber is a person who can handle a scrubbing machine, the Australians understand it to be 'an animal gone wild'. Take your pick!
Jim Morwitch, team leader of the Australian GSE visitors addressed the meeting and introduced his fellow delegates. Each of them spared a few minutes to tell us a little about themselves and where they come from.

The meeting ended with Closing Toast proposed by the District Governor, Graham Thornton.
